Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful and catastrophic Cape Verde (an Atlantic hurricane) type hurricane, the most intense observed in the Atlantic since Dean in 2007. It was also the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the United States since Katrina in 2005, and the first major hurricane to make landfall in the state of Florida since Wilma in 2005. Irma developed on August 30, 2017 near the Cape Verde Islands, from a tropical wave that had moved off the West African coast three days prior. Under favorable conditions, Irma rapidly intensified shortly after formation, becoming a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale within a mere 24 hours. It became a Category 3 hurricane (and therefore a major hurricane) shortly afterward. However, the intensity fluctuated between Categories 2 and 3 for the next several days due to a series of eye wall replacement cycles. On September 4, Irma resumed intensifying, becoming a Category 5 hurricane by early the next day. On September 6, Irma reached its peak intensity with 185 mph (295 km/h) winds and a minimum pressure of 914 hPa (27.0 inHg), making it the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide so far in 2017.

Hurricane Irma over the Virgin Islands at peak intensity on September 6, 2017 as the second most intense Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of sustained winds.

Irma’s consequences in Florida: More than 6, 3 million people received the order to evacuate zones threatened by the depression. What represents near the third of the inhabitants of this state which considers it 19,8 millions. In terms of population, Florida is the third state the most populated with the United States. The services of transport of passengers and goods had to suspend a big part of their activity. The hurricane caused the cancellation of more than 12.587 departing flights or upon the arrival of the Florida and in the zone Caribbean between the first one and in September 11th according to figures spread by ABC news. The office of the governor of Florida also indicated that 12 ports of American cities were closed as those of Miami, Palm Beach and Jacksonville or Tampa. The human balance sheet grows heavy in Florida (20 deaths). Collapsed buildings, mobile home crushed and tons of fragments as far as the eye can see: Irma left behind him considerable damages in the archipelago of Keys, with 85 % of the totally or partially destroyed houses.

STORM-IRMA/

Irma’s consequences in Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy: 12 water supplies on 15 was destroyed, the tap water does not arrive any more at faucets. The telephone lines are deprived relay, telephone communications are possible only by getting closer to the nearby British island Anguilla, in 13 km in the North of Saint Martin. The sensors of weather report France are destroyed by the 360 kph winds, and important floods affect roads and airport of Saint-Barthélemy because of the flood of the swell with waves about 10 meters. The help (fire brigades, gendarmerie and administrations) both islands being themselves victims, the help to the populations are very slow. The communications and the electricity are totally got away on both islands because of the important damages on both thermal power plants from the fuel and accordingly, the desalination plants of the water (besides their clean damages) are stationary what pulls a total absence of drinking water. In the evening of the passage of the hurricane, 85 % of houses are destroyed or damaged and 10 000 people, 65 % of the population, are listed without roof at Saint Martin. The situation of the housing environment in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre is clearly less dramatic. He not it in is proposed to the victims of shelters, but that 1600 places for 35000 inhabitants.

People helped to clean the Vietnam Veterans Wall on August 12,2017

In America, it’s been 42 years since American soldiers fought on the Vietnam ground, since they died or were wounded. The Vietnam War wasn’t popular and the soldiers didn’t come back from Vietnam as heroes. But today, people need to heal that wound, that one which is deeply in their guts ,to accept and move forward after that difficult period ,when day to day, you could have lost your brother, your father, your husband, your son…

That’s why once a month, from April to October, members of a Veteran group gather themselves in the morning to clean the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C, also known as the “wall that heals”. Some people say it’s for the visitor’s comfort to see the wall but above all, it’s to show that “these guys" – and ladies – aren’t forgotten. They’re never forgotten .At least they never should be forgotten” said in 2013 ,Forrest Lingenfelter, a member of the Rolling Thunder (a biker group who travel all around the US for memorial day and other occassions).

It’s not only to pay a tribute but also a way to blow all the memory, Jan Scruggs, a decorated Vietnam Veteran says “this memorial has helped to heal many individual wounds from the war, psychological wound. By seeing the name and touching the name of one of your friend, many people do feel a sense of relief after many years .So washing the wall is kind a part of that too.”

On August 12, 2017, the NMFA (national military family association) asked for volunteers to wash the Wall ,and people, mostly Veterans, came alone or with their families, some say it brought back mixed memories because, for sure, these Veterans had lost fellows in this war, and had not come back home, but some did, like Steve Nelson of district Heights “I have 11 buddies on that wall, including my best friend from high school”.

So yes, it’s difficult to come to that sort of place and see so many names written on the wall, exactly 58,195, when you know that they fought for your country. So what would it take you to wake early in the morning during your holiday, answer an association such as the NMFA and go and clean a memorial wall? Because it’s your history and you have the choice whereas they didn’t.

So what would you do to pay a tribute ?

Weapons can lead to terrible events

Some historical facts on the origin of firearms: The first firearm was created in 1836 by Samuel Colt but with the centuries which pass, firearms become more and more dangerous especially for the United States. Indeed, the more weapons there are, the more murders there are.

Why do I draw this conclusion? Because of these weapons, millions of people die, certain people use it for pleasure whereas others use it as a protective shield.

The United States is the first country which counts so many murders in the world. Because of the 2nd Amendment every American citizen is free to have a walk with a firearm in his / her pocket, and it’s incredible. Ten great massacres can confirm this thesis the simplest to be held is the one of Columbine where two students killed many people.

  columbine-massacre-2-728.jpg

They are the massacres the most evoked in the history of the United States, let us take a massacre which took place 9 years ago to connect the fact that weapons are dangerous. During the shooting of Virginia tech, on April 16th, 2007, A South Korean student, Cho Seung Hui entered his high school as he always did but that time the student had two weapons, he shot down two people in a residence of Virginia Tech's university, in Blacksburg.

Cho Seung Hui filmed and sent a video will to the NBC news in which he made a reference to the slaughter which took place at  Columbine in 1999, in particular two main authors of this massacre: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. He also denounced the hedonism of the rich. After this video, the student run in the corridors of the residence by brandishing two handguns. The student was determined to do what he had planned to made 32 victims and 25 wounded people. This slaughter is the most murderous in the history of the United States in peacetime. Before committing this act, the South Korean student had been declared as being mentally defective by a court in 2005 and was presented as somebody dangerous for him and his circle of acquaintances; he had stayed in a psychiatric hospital because of his intentions to commit suicide. The influence of the weapons which leads to these massacres is big, indeed, we notice that many teenagers and students are the people who buy the highest number of weapons in the United States, the example of Virginia tech is heavy because the student was influenced by Columbine's slaughter. To end this article, I suggest putting this video to understand what really happened at Columbine High School

The 2nd amendment : an advantage only for the NRA ?

As we know, there is in the USA a law allowing the inhabitants to carry a gun. In fact, the 2nd Amendment is the so famous law which allows every citizen to own an arm (it is not precised if it is a gun or not, but that is the interpretation). The lobby which defend this amendment is the NRA. Nevertheless, we cannot say that they are the only ones who take advantage of this situation. Indeed, there is an American phenomenon which particularly shows up the importance of this amendment: the gangs' war.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America

shannon_watts.pngThe stay-at-home mom named Shannon Watts created on December 15th, 2012 the association Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She declared that she created the association on the same model as Mother Against Drunk Driving. It was created in response to the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut where the young man Adam Lanza, aged twenty, shot twenty children aged between six and seven years old and six adult staff members, before shooting himself, on December 14th , 2012. The goal is to demand actions to establish common-sense gun reforms by demanding actions from legislators, states and federals, companies and educational institutions.

The actions of the association started with a Facebook page entitled “One Million Moms for Gun Control”. At the end of 2013, the group welcomed 130,000 members. In December of the same year, Moms Demand Actions partnered with Mayors against Illegal Guns to form Everytown for Gun Safety. The goal was to unite millions of American to work with them in order to make the things change and to end the gun violence that touch every states.
logo_mayors_against-illegal-guns.png
Everytown_final_logo.png

The fact is that Moms Demand Action is not against the wearing of guns or against the Second Amendment, it was just made to try to make children and families safer because many people think that there still are many accidents or massacres because of weapons. Moms want to do something to change that before it is too late : they want to be sure that there will have better controls when someone buys a gun especially checking backgrounds.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is everywhere in the social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube). In fact, this way they can have a global impact, everyone can support, make a donation for that. Moreover, there are many demonstrations in the streets in America including in Washington DC, in front of the White House and then , they could meet members of Congress to discuss about gun control. Mothers want to have the biggest impact possible.

miller-park-way-042616-2-jpg.jpg

On Tuesday, April 26th in the USA in the State of the Midwest, a child aged two accidentally killed his mother aged 26 in her car when driving on a highway in Milwaukee.

Indeed, the weapon was of caliber 40 mm, it was under the seat, loaded and belonged to the partner of the victim who is a security guard. Moreover, it was the partner's vehicle. Indeed, he had lent her his car because her vehicle had been stolen a few days earlier. On board was the victim's mother with one son aged of one year old.

edgar_and_patrice.jpg

The police suppose that the child was not attached in order to reach the gun located on the ground.

She was pronounced dead a few minutes after help arrived, leaving behind two children. A tribute was paid to her the next day, on Wednesday, April 27th.

In addition, the victim, Patrice Price, was also in charge of her sister, paralyzed after a shootout several months ago.

The office in charge of the investigation refuses to declare if charges can be retained against the child and refuses to communicate if this act is considered as a crime.

Farewell Alan Rickman

Today, I'll talk about a great actor gone too soon. You must know him, because he played in a lot of known movies. I'll talk about the one and only Alan Rickman.

Alan_Rickman_blog.jpg

Alan Sydney Patrick Rickman was born on February 21, 1946 in Hammersmith (a neighbourhood of London). His father, Bernard Rickman, was a factory worker (who died because of a lung cancer when Alan was eight) and his mother, Margaret Doreen Rose Rickman (who died in 1997) was a housewife. He had 3 siblings, his elder brother David Rickman, his younger brother Micheal Rickman and his younger sister Sheila Rickman.
When he was a child, he had speech problems, his jaw was very tight and this was what gave him this very recognizable voice.

He had his first role at 7 years old, he was playing the main character of the play King Grizzly Bear.

He began as a graphic artist in the Chelsea College of Art and Design, there he met his future wife, Rima Horton, a British politician.
Later, he created a society with his friends which was named Graphiti and he was the boss of some graphic artists.

At 26 years old,Alan Rickman received a scholarship to get in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and that was when his great ascent as an actor began.

His first big role was as Hans Gruber in the movie Die Hard with Bruce Willis, with this famous scene of him when he's falling from the building :

He played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves too :

Rickman_Blog.jpg

And he played an unfaithful husband in Love Actually :

Love_Actually.jpg

(During the same year,he was named vice-president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and became director.)

But he was very known for his role in Harry Potter as Professor Snape :

Snape.jpg

He played in a lot of other movies like Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton, A Little Chaos with Kate Winslet directed by himself, ect, ...

But on January 14, 2016 , Alan Rickman's family announced that after a long battle against cancer, Alan Rickman died at 69 years old.

Farewell Alan Rickman, Rest In Peace, we raise our wands to the sky to pay homage to the most fabulous actor of times.

September 11 2001 and November 13 2015

After what happened in Paris,on the 13th of November 2015, I decided to write this article in memory of the 128 deaths, to support the 237 injured, and to pay an homage to the bereaved families.

My desire to write this article came to me after I saw this picture :

vlcsnap-2015-11-16-09h02m53s952.png

This picture is a photo which represents 1 World Trade Center with the colours of the French flag, New York illuminated itself with the French colours in homage to the victims of the attacks in Paris.
When I see this photo, I remember an event which happened in America 14 years ago :

BONUS_Twin_Towers.jpg

It was the attacks in New York on the 11th of September 2001, when the Twin Towers were destroyed, and France paid an homage to America :

BONUS_11_Septembre_2001.jpg

With these two pictures, we can see that the friendship between America and France is still here, even after more than 10 years.

This shot created emotion and indignation worldwide; many newspapers made their newspaper’s frontpage, but not in France. This picture has become the symbol of migrants' tragedy.
In total, 12 people drowned, among them, the mother and brother of Aylan, aged 5 years. Only the father, Abdullah, survived and returned to his hometown, in northern Syria, to bury his wife and children. Europe, where there was tension over the influx of migrants, was reeled by the death of the little boy.
French politicians have reacted on social networks , to try to stop the tragedies due to the influx of migrants in Europe, but also to honor the little boy.

Hiroshima, seventy years later

On August 6th, 2015, Japan commemorated the atomic bombing of Hiroshima which happened on August 6th 1945, seventy years ago.
A minute of silence was organized at 08:15 am in Hiroshima’s Peace Park, a woman and a child made a big bell ringing. This precise hour was chosen because Hiroshima was bombing at the same hour in 1945. Tens of thousands of people made the appointment at Hiroshima where one million two thousand people live. This city became a symbol of pacifism.
Hiroshima is situated on the north coast of the island of Honshu in Japan.
The city was bombed on August 6th 1945 and destroyed by the US bomb, “Little Boy”, dropped by the American bomber B-29 Enola Gay. A hundred forty thousand people were assassinated. The fireball declared by the blast attained a temperature about one million degree Celsius with four thousand degrees on the ground after the bomb impact. Apart from the hundred forty thousand people who died, fifty thousand people succumbed to the sickness caused by the irradiations.
Three days later, on August 9th 1945, it was Nagasaki which was bombed. This time, seventy thousand people were killed. Because of these two bombings, Japan surrendered in War World II and it marked the end of this terrible war.

Nowadays, two hundred thousand survivors named Hibakusha are still alive. These people are haunted by the bodies' burning memory. During the commemoration, some of them talked to the chief of government including Yukio Yoshioka who said: “these weapons will revive the war’s tragedy in our country. They must be removed”.
The mayor, Kazumi Matsui, asked for the suppression of nuclear weapons, which he named “the absolute evil” and the creation of safety systems which will not depend on military power. He addresses the “world’s leaders”, asking them to “come in the cities bombed, listen to the Hibakusha’s stories and know the reality of nuclear bombings ”. Well, representatives of hundred countries came to the commemoration, including Caroline Kennedy, the USA’s ambassadress in Japan, and Rose Goettemoeller, the weapon control’s undersecretary. Shinzo Abe, Japan’s Prime Minister, pronounced a defense speech against nuclear weapons.

Hiroshima, a painful memory

Japan commemorated on August 6th 2015 the terrible anniversary of the first atomic assault. 70 years ago, the first nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and it reduced the town to ashes. This event urged the country to capitulate, it marked the end of the 2nd World War. This bomb had a destructive power equivalent to 16 kilotons of TNT, the ground's temperature was 7.232 F, it wiped out all in the surrounding area. We assessed 140,000 people were killed at the impact point and subsequently under the effect of radiations.

PRESS_R_1.jpg

At 08 : 15 am a young woman and a pupil took a lengthy suspended beam to ring a high bell. This given fact occurred at the precise time when the American bomber aircraft called Enola Gay, flying at high altitude, dropped an uranium bomb and spread fire and death on this big Japanese city. A crowd of 55,000 people came to meditate at the city's Peace Memorial of 1.2 millions inhabitants of the archipel which became the symbol of pacifism. After a minute of silence, the floor was opened to the mayor Kazumi Matsui and then to a group of young children.

The Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe was here, surrounded by the representatives of 100 countries, the largest number ever seen before in the ceremonies of Hiroshima. Among them, Caroline Kennedy, ambassadress of the United States in Japan, and Rose Gottemoeller, the American Under-Secretary who is the manager in the highest position ever sent at an annual remembrance.

image.jpg

image__1_.jpg

Tetsuzo Kida, independent photographer present at the ceremony said : I want the world to know what happened, here, in Hiroshima, at the same time, Human is the cause and the victim.

We have Sachiko's testimony, an hibaskusha, also a bomb survivor : I ask all Humans to stop wars and I want the world to live peacefully

This event will remain etched in everybody's memory!
